Coral reef restoration

Coral reefs are among the richest ecosystems on Earth, yet they are in serious decline due to warming seas, pollution and overfishing. In response, scientists have begun experimenting with restoration techniques, growing coral fragments in underwater nurseries and transplanting them onto damaged reefs. Early results are encouraging, with some restored areas showing renewed growth and returning fish. Nevertheless, researchers caution that such efforts, however valuable, cannot keep pace with the scale of the damage if the underlying causes are not addressed. Restoration, they stress, is a treatment for the symptoms, not a cure for the disease driving the loss.
