Microplastics — fragments of synthetic polymer material measuring less than five millimetres in diameter — have been detected in environments so remote and varied that scientists have been forced to conclude that plastic contamination is now a truly global phenomenon with no remaining pristine refuge on Earth. These particles originate from multiple sources, including the gradual fragmentation of larger plastic debris under ultraviolet radiation and mechanical stress, the shedding of synthetic fibres during domestic laundering, the erosion of vehicle tyres on road surfaces, and the deliberate incorporation of microbeads into personal care products, which were banned in several countries only after significant accumulation had already occurred. Marine ecosystems have received particular research attention, with studies documenting microplastic ingestion by organisms ranging from microscopic zooplankton to large filter-feeding whales, raising concerns that plastics and the toxic chemical compounds that adsorb onto their surfaces are moving through food webs in ways that are only beginning to be understood. More recently, researchers have identified microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, and placentas, shifting the issue from an environmental concern to a direct human health question, although the clinical consequences of this internal accumulation remain a subject of active and urgent investigation. The pervasiveness of microplastic contamination challenges conventional pollution management frameworks, which typically address discrete point sources, and demands instead systemic reductions in plastic production alongside improved waste management infrastructure worldwide.
