Dense urban environments offer undeniable economic advantages, including greater access to employment opportunities, specialised services, and cultural institutions, while also facilitating the kind of spontaneous human interaction and cross-cultural exchange that historically drives innovation and social progress. However, rapid and often poorly managed urbanisation simultaneously generates significant social challenges, including rising housing costs that displace established communities, increased anonymity that weakens traditional neighbourhood bonds, and the spatial concentration of poverty in marginalised districts that can entrench intergenerational disadvantage and social immobility. Research consistently indicates that a sense of community belonging and interpersonal trust, metrics that sociologists collectively term social cohesion, tends to decline in rapidly growing cities unless deliberate investment is made in public spaces, local governance structures, and inclusive urban design that encourages meaningful interaction across socioeconomic boundaries.
