Hydrothermal vents, discovered only in 1977, further expanded scientific understanding by revealing chemosynthetic ecosystems that derive energy not from sunlight but from hydrogen sulphide released by volcanic activity on the ocean floor. These communities challenge long-held assumptions about the prerequisites for life and have prompted astrobiologists to consider the possibility of similar ecosystems existing on moons such as Europa and Enceladus. Despite representing approximately ninety-five percent of the habitable space on Earth, the deep ocean remains largely unexplored, with new species being discovered on virtually every research expedition, underscoring the urgent need for expanded deep-sea research funding and stronger international marine conservation policies before human activity irreversibly damages these fragile environments.
