Ocean currents function as a vast planetary heat-exchange system, redistributing solar energy absorbed at the equator toward the higher latitudes and thereby moderating the climatic extremes that would otherwise render large portions of the Earth far less hospitable to life. The thermohaline circulation, often described as the global ocean conveyor belt, is driven by density differences arising from variations in water temperature and salinity, causing surface waters cooled in the North Atlantic to sink to the deep ocean and slowly migrate southward before eventually upwelling in warmer regions. This circulation pattern exerts a decisive influence on the climates of entire continents; the relatively mild temperatures experienced in northwestern Europe, for instance, are substantially attributable to the warm surface flow of the Gulf Stream, which transports enormous quantities of heat across the Atlantic. Marine biologists further note that upwelling zones generated where currents diverge bring nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, sustaining some of the most productive fisheries on the planet and underpinning food security for hundreds of millions of people. Climate scientists express growing alarm, however, that accelerating freshwater input from melting polar ice sheets may be weakening thermohaline circulation, with potentially severe consequences for regional weather patterns, sea-level distribution, and marine ecosystems that current models are still struggling to fully quantify.
