Prolonged exposure to elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter, particularly particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, has been causally linked to cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and adverse neurological outcomes. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions experience disproportionately severe health impacts, exacerbating existing social inequalities. Governments and municipalities have responded with a range of interventions, including stricter vehicle emission standards, expansion of low-emission zones, incentives for electrification of transport fleets, and investment in urban green infrastructure designed to absorb pollutants and moderate temperature extremes. Despite measurable progress in some high-income nations, air quality in many rapidly urbanising regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America continues to deteriorate, underscoring the need for coordinated international action and technology transfer to protect public health at a global scale.
