Nations across South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America are now leveraging abundant solar resources to expand electricity access in rural communities that have historically been excluded from centralised grid infrastructure, bypassing the fossil fuel development pathways followed by earlier industrialising economies. Nevertheless, significant technical and institutional challenges remain, particularly concerning the intermittent nature of solar generation and the need for expanded energy storage capacity, grid modernisation, and cross-border interconnection to ensure reliable supply. Addressing these challenges will require sustained public investment, innovative market design, and international cooperation if solar energy is to fulfil its potential as a cornerstone of a decarbonised global energy system.
