Water management has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges of the twenty-first century, as growing populations, industrial demands, and the accelerating effects of climate change place unprecedented strain on freshwater resources worldwide. Effective water management encompasses a broad range of strategies, including the construction and maintenance of reservoirs, the implementation of irrigation efficiencies in agriculture, and the treatment and recycling of wastewater for secondary use. Agriculture alone accounts for approximately 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals, making improvements in irrigation technology, such as drip irrigation and precision agriculture, critical components of any comprehensive water conservation strategy. Urban water systems face their own distinct challenges, including aging infrastructure prone to significant leakage, unequal distribution of clean water across socioeconomic communities, and the increasing frequency of droughts that reduce municipal water supplies. Integrated water resource management, a framework that coordinates the development of water, land, and related resources across stakeholder groups, has been widely advocated as an approach capable of balancing competing demands while maintaining ecological sustainability. Without coordinated international and local policy responses, water scarcity is projected to affect more than half of the world's population by 2050.
