Ocean currents constitute a vast and intricately interconnected system of water circulation that plays a decisive role in regulating the Earth's climate, distributing heat between equatorial and polar regions, and sustaining the marine ecosystems upon which billions of people depend for food and economic livelihoods. The global thermohaline circulation, sometimes described informally as the ocean conveyor belt, is driven primarily by differences in water temperature and salinity that cause dense, cold water masses to sink in high-latitude regions and flow slowly along the ocean floor before eventually upwelling elsewhere. Surface currents, by contrast, are principally governed by prevailing wind patterns and the rotational forces generated by the Earth's spin, producing the large gyres observable in each of the major ocean basins. These circulatory systems exert a powerful moderating influence on regional climates, with the North Atlantic Current, for instance, delivering sufficient warmth to render much of northwestern Europe significantly milder than its latitude would otherwise suggest. Scientific concern has intensified in recent decades over evidence that accelerating polar ice melt attributable to anthropogenic climate change is introducing unprecedented volumes of freshwater into the North Atlantic, potentially disrupting thermohaline circulation with severe and far-reaching consequences for weather patterns, sea levels, and biodiversity.
