Position 1: Together, these two early railways established the technical and financial templates upon which the global rail network would be constructed throughout the nineteenth century.

Position 3: The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 is widely regarded as the birth of the modern public railway system.

Position 4: That subsequent line demonstrated that steam traction could operate reliably over longer distances and at speeds that dramatically outpaced horse-drawn transport.
