Stars are born within vast, clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae. When gravity causes regions of a nebula to , the material at the centre heats up and eventually ignites nuclear fusion, producing a protostar. The surrounding disk of debris may into planets over millions of years. Astronomers use infrared telescopes to these early stages of stellar development, as visible light cannot penetrate the dense surrounding material.
